Baseball and Back-to-School

  • I recently had the pleasure of visiting Citi Field in New York City to watch a Mets game courtesy of Verizon Wireless. On a day when the Mets finally managed to win a home game I also got the chance to look at some of Verizon Wireless’s back-to-school offerings.

great pictures only to find out that they are too small for good-size prints.

Although Verizon Wireless is primarily known for its phones and tablets, they also offer a huge range of accessories and other consumer tech products through their stores and online through the Verizon Wireless web site. Gadgets for sale include everything from headphones to helicopters (toy ones, that is!). Here are just a few of the great back-to-school items that were on display at the Mets game:

    Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

This is hands-down my favorite tablet right now. At just 12 ounces, the super-thin Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is big enough to get some serious work done but small enough to slip into a purse or a pocket. The Super AMOLED screen is crystal clear even in bright sunlight, and the dual-core processor and Verizon 4G network combine to deliver lightning-fast response rates to everything from web surfing to multi-player gaming.

One of the best things about Verizon’s new Share Everything plan is that a 4G tablet can be added for just a $10 per month access fee. And no more 2-year contracts – all tablet activations are now month-to-month. If you have been shying away from networked devices in favor of Wi-Fi-only, then now’s the time to make the change.

    Price: $549.99

    Samsung Galaxy S III

Although a comparison of smartphones across different operating systems is notoriously subjective, there is no doubt that Samsung’s Galaxy S III is about as state-of-the-art as you can get. Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the S III has very every feature you can imagine, including S-Voice, Allshare Play, S-Beam and a host of other productivity and sharing tools.

The multiple home screens offer limitless customization and the convenient app folder feature will allow your student to have all his school and homework apps in one convenient place. The S III comes in blue or white and is available in 16GB and 32GB versions.

Price: from $199.99 (two-year contract required)

    Wicked EVAC Universal Stereo Headphones

Every self-respecting student should have a good pair of headphones, and Wicked’s EVAC Universal over-the-ear headphones are some of the best. I tried them out with my LG Lucid and was impressed with the deep base and the powerful sound they produced at any volume level. The EVAC comes with a built-in mic for hands-free communication. At just $59.99 it would be hard to find better value anywhere!

    Price: $59.99

    Jawbone BIG JAMBOX Bluetooth Speaker

This revolutionary device can act as a smartphone speaker or as a stand-alone speaker for music and other media. The Bluetooth technology allows for easy wireless connection and portability, and it’s powerful enough to fill an entire school hall with its crystal clear hi-fi audio. The BIG JAMBOX automatically recognizes devices after it has been connected just once, and Jawbone’s MyTALK online platform allows you to download software upgrades and a variety of add-on apps.

    Price: $299.97
