The arrival of 4G networks for our smartphones and tablets has resulted in more than just better call connections and super-fast web browsing; it has also turned our mobile devices into on-the-go entertainment hubs, allowing us to watch our favorite movies and TV shows wherever and whenever we want.
This point was brought home to me recently when I was discussing Veep, one of my favorite TV series, which debuted in April of this year and stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a fictional Vice President. I was lamenting the fact that I missed some of the earlier shows when my friend told me I could watch the entire series anytime I wanted to on HBO Go.
HBO Go is just one of the many TV streaming services that have leaped in popularity with the introduction of 4G mobile devices. If you subscribe to HBO through any of the major TV providers, then you can get unlimited access to all your favorite TV shows, hit movies and much more on the iPad, iPhone, Android devices and other mobile platforms.
So now I can watch Veep, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and more on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 whether I am lying in bed, riding the train to work, or just relaxing in the garden on weekends. All I need to do is keep an eye on my network data consumption or switch to data-saving Wi-Fi whenever I have the opportunity.
As I mentioned earlier, HBO Go isn’t the only game in town when it comes to streaming TV shows and other entertainment. Showtime Anytime offers a similar free service to Showtime subscribers who own an iPad or an iPhone (with an Android app coming soon). And then there are the subscription-based services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, which offer a huge selection of TV shows and movies for a full range of mobile devices.
Verizon Wireless customers can also search for movies, TV shows and other video through viewdini, a portal that brings together content from a wide range of entertainment sources, including movie studios, cable operators and web sites, such as Netflix, Hulu+, ABC, Lifetime and more. Searching by title, topic or even an actor’s name will reveal which services have matching video available for mobile streaming and whether there is a charge to rent or purchase or if a subscription is required. Lots of free content is also available! Viewdini is currently available to Verizon Wireless customers on 4G LTE-enabled Android devices, iPhone 4, 4S, iPad and with support for other platforms coming soon.
So no more sitting on the couch waiting for your favorite show to come on. Your mobile device is your new entertainment hub, and your 4G network means anytime, anywhere programming!
